This is probably the last shot I'm going to upload from my trip to Syria (unless I find a shot that I missed the first time around!).

Here we have another shot of a merchant in the old Souq of Damascus, surrounding him are prayer beads ("Masbaha" in Arabic).

A Masbaha is a tool used in an Islamic practice that focuses on the remembrance of God.

Consisting of 99 beads(divided into sections of 33) in total they represents the 99 names of God in Islam. Smaller versions consist of 33 beads, where people go through three cycles to reach the 99.

Some of the more popular recantations repeated in the counts are: glory to God, praise be to God and God is great.

Nowadays they are more popular as status symbols and worry beads.

oh yes, I didn't want to explicitly call it a rosary because I don't really understand how it was used within the Catholic faith, and the only source I could find is Wikipedia-and I don't really trust them :)

the rosary in catholic faith is more of a meditative instrument: it helps to concentrate your mind on the prayers and god.
