The Wonderful city of Salé(Pronounced Sala) located on the Bou Regreg river opposite to Rabat City although if you ask me its the same city
This was the first walled city that I entered in Morocco, the small streets the white washed walls and the colourful doorways where mesmerizing, Im not even going to start on the markets! At its hight this city was famous for being a pirate stronghold for Muslim Corsairs who roamed the seas as far as the shores of the Americas, bringing back loot and slaves. on a side note; I love referring to it as "The pirate City" The city was also the main subject in Peter Lamborn Wilson's book Pirate Utopias: Moorish Corsairs & European Renegadoes(I ordered the book so ill give more details later) in which he puts forward that they created Autonomous Pirate Utopia's. What you see before you is Salé's Grand Mosque(right Door) And a Madrasa(Left Door). Both buildings are gorgeous and date back to around 1341 Comments
i love the odd angles of this shot, well done as always.
-- [les temps sont durs pour les rêveurs]///[reciprocate]//// /// //// /// // ///// That's beautiful! I loved also "Pirate Utopias"!
I'd like to see a movie made of the book! The book is a historical document, but there's enough there to make a story inspired by. I like in particular the holy man who had a palm tree following him and when he went to teach to women transformed himself into one so they would not be scandalized. Really, be a neat "Late meme Pirate movie" and though plenty of Pirate action be full of mystical Islamist and early anarchist philosophy. If it got made for real the "Right Wingers" would probably pawn their guns to make a "Christian Pirate Movie" like "The Knights of Martel" but this would end up being an embarrassing farce. Notably that the City State of Sale that Hakim Bey refers to was a period of about a century (most anarchist utopias last 14 months) while the Knights of Martel turned into vicious pirates and more danger to fellow Christians in not a decade. I agree if it where made into a move they'd probably destroy it, like they do with many other great books.
There are so many things in islamic history that i'd love to see transformed into high budget Movies, like the the life of Usama ibn Munqid or the Mamluks last stand against Napoleon, come to think of it a movie based on Leo the African wouldn't hurt either -- Constructive criticism and advice welcome.
